Still developing in the time of Mozart and Haydn, the woodwind grew from occasional solo instruments to crucial members of the orchestra, most often written for in pairs. As these players often appear as sectional members and soloists, we maintain at least three regular players of each instrument - each with differing interests and specialities. We perform using a mixture of modern instruments (those such as the clarinet have not changed dramatically since the 1790s though we also use Basset Clarinets, a specialised instrument used only in this period) and historical instruments such as basset horns and a variety of oboes.
